F.A.Q.s For Job Seekers
1)
Are you hiring?
Paige Wolf Media & Public Relations is a primarily
home-based one-woman company. WE ARE NOT HIRING AT THIS TIME.
2)
Should I e-mail, mail, or
call?
Please do not mail paper resumes. Remember, we
are an eco-friendly company so your beautifully-binded resume package is
actually a big turn off. Please do not call either to see if we received your
resume. E-mail is always the best option. And whatever you do, DO NOT show up
at my front door with a resume in hand. I’m really trying to avoid getting one
of those P.O. Box things.
3)
Can I have an informational interview?
Informational interviews are a great thing and
I would never have gotten where I am without them. However, at this particular
time with the new baby, I am simply swamped and unfortunately do not even
have time for a cup of coffee with an eager job seeker. I’m really sorry and I
promise if you contact a company with a dozen employees there will be someone
there happy for you to buy them lunch.
4) Can I interview you for
my school project? My professor says I have to talk to a PR professional for an
hour.
Your professor might have good intentions, but again,
I am really swamped right now. I really am sorry and promise to return job
seeker karma when time allows. Again, go to the big companies. I’m sure there
is an assistant to an assistant with some free time and happy to help you.
5) What is your advice for
potential job seekers in the PR industry?
The people who send me personal e-mails and
have really researched my company always appeal to me the most. Sending emails
addressed “To whom it may concern” or “To the human resources department” have
not done their research.
Network, network, network. Go beyond the public
relations networking groups and network within your niche. If you love animals,
go to an animal shelter benefit or volunteer at PAWS. If you are interested in
healthcare public relations, go to a happy hour for the healthcare industry.
You never know when you may meet someone with an in-house position available
which could really utilize your passion and your talent!
I know the economy stinks and the public
relations industry is hard to break in to. Just keep trying to get experience
anyway you can and all your hard work and passion will pay off!
