August 2008 The Paige Turner: It's All Greek and Good to Me
Paige Wolf Media & Public Relations Newsletter
Yes, I admit it. I used extravagant amounts of fuel to travel across the Atlantic Ocean to Venice and then board a massive cruise ship, which undoubtedly consumes its weight in oil very quickly.

It was not the greenest trip, but it did more than reinvigorate and energize my body and soul. It taught me a few surprising things about the way our friends across the globe are greening their communities. And I hate to say it, but they may be kicking our butts.

In Athens, Greece I had no problem finding simple three-holed recycling receptacles as prevalent as gyro stands. On the olive-tree covered island of Corfu, electronics stores have buckets outside filled to the brim with residents' recycled batteries. Even the Royal Caribbean cruise ship pleasantly surprised me with their "Save The Waves" program, which at the very least made recycling bins easier to find than in any American city I've visited lately. Although I must give props to the Market East train station, which has thoughtfully peppered the landscape with recycling bins.

Hopefully, as we travel the world and see the good ideas abroad, we can work to implement them in our own cities. Or at least in our homes.

Cheap and Green for Back to School

Shopping for back to school -- and even shopping in general - used to be all about having the hottest new thing. But for Fall 2008, most Americans are worried about two things: the cheapest and the greenest. Anything that saves money and natural resources is usually a consumer's best option. Luckilly, we have your sources for both.

One of the most popular deal sites on the Web, Cheapstingybargains.com is an online community that lists the best coupons and deals to help save consumers money. Perfect for that new laptop or desktop, the most popular page on cheapstingybargains.com is the Dell Coupons and Dell Deals page, which offers step-by-step money-saving advice for customizing desktops and notebooks with the most valuable options and at the lowest prices. Cheapstingybargains.com also has an extensive listing for other popular computers, including HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony, and Apple. From computers and electronics to binder and backpacks, find deals from all from the leading vendors on the Web, including Wal-Mart, Nordstrom, Target, Amazon.com, Circuit City, and Best Buy.

As important as buying what's cool and cost-effective, students and their families now want to purchase environmentally sound products. GreenLine Paper offers a wide selection of products from 100 percent recycled copier paper and notebooks to pens, paper, eco-friendly lunch bags, and more. Choose from recycled Post-it notes, Earthwise report covers, recycled toner and ink cartridges, disk media, recycled old money pencils and eco-ballpoint pens, reusable sandwich bags, planners and calendars, and everything you need from kindergarten through graduate school. See coupons below for savings on your first order.

Special Attire Request from The Career Wardrobe

The Career Wardrobeis in need of a few specialty items. While you clean out your fall wardrobe to make room for the new, check and see if you have what they are looking for. In order to help clients entering into the service industries, The Career Wardrobe is requesting black pants and skirts, khaki pants, white tops/blouses, scrubs (without logos), nursing shoes and clogs, black "no skid" shoes and sneakers, and steel-toed boots. Feel free to bring donations to their office at 1211 Chestnut St., Suite 205, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. They suggest calling prior to your drop-off to ensure they are in the office and not out in the community. You or your company can also host a Black and White drive of your own. To get started contact Heather Bennett at (215) 568-6693.
