December 2008 The Paige Turner: Stop the Circular Madness
Paige Wolf Media & Public Relations Newsletter
In a green economy, smart marketing should be both direct and socially conscious. One of the most frustrating forms of litter are the take-out menus and political propaganda that appear on doorsteps and in mail slots daily. These are particularly difficult to even recycle because they get blown by wind, soaked by rain, and generally tossed about into the streets. I heard about the "Circular Free Property" decals available free from the city and was surprised to find that for the most part, it actually works. Maybe the delivery people know that once you have one of these things you can report them if they continue to bombard you with this silly and intrusive form of marketing.

As for positive marketing, one of my favorite new Web sites is HowYouEco, a social-networking site for the eco-conscious. This site allows you to post a profile and connect with the people and businesses you patronize as part of your own green lifestyle.

Happy Holidays!

November 2008 The Paige Turner: This Newsletter Will Save You Money
Paige Wolf Media & Public Relations Newsletter
We hear it loud and clear. The economy is in the toilet. We are all scared to shop or eat or even buy milk. Thankfully, we can feel positive that things will turn around and probably aren't as bad as the media says, right?

But in the meantime, I can share some tips for saving on the small stuff so you can splurge on the good stuff. I've been living frugally for a while, mostly because in many ways it goes hand in hand with living green and also because it gives me great pleasure to save. Here are a few things you should try so you can enjoy that dinner date without feeling too bad.

  • Don't buy anything without checking for the best price and coupon codes at cheapstingybargains.com. And while you're there, stock up on free magazine subscriptions and travel toiletries.
  • Attend or host a clothing swap. A great way to get a new wardrobe absolutely free while recycling the stuff you're over. Remember, one person's trash is another's treasure.
  • The Career Wardrobehosts monthly clothing sales the first Thursday of each month. Last month I got a super cute skirt and blouse for $14.
  • Everyone's been asking where I got my new $15 boots, so I'll let you in on a slightly shameful secret. GoJane.com - surely not eco-friendly and probably meant for teenagers, but so cheap and cute in a pinch.
  • Looking for a unique pillow case, handbag, holiday gift, or anything else you can think of? I adore etsy.com for finding handmade crafts. In fact, I've even set up my own little shop on there for knitted handbags made with repurposed materials. I mean, while the economy's down, I might as well utilize all my hobbies.

Holiday Shopping's Easy at Mainline Green Home

It's been incredibly fun doing my holiday shopping at Mainline Green Home this season, where I can give the gift of green without being too pushy. Considering I've thought about just showering people with boxes of CFL lightbulbs, it's much nicer to give them something beautiful and fun, yet still green and practical.

Kids go crazy for Glee Gum's make-your-own chewing gum, chocolate, and gummies and Clementine Art Kits' organic play dough and paint kits. For the babies, it's Kate Quinn organic baby and toddler kimono-style clothing and caps and Can You Dig It organic clothing and accessories. I've actually been able to expand my male gift giving beyond ties with Vinylux home accessories and journals made from repurposed vinyl records and Resource Revival clocks and home accessories created recycled bike chains and gears. And then there's the person who has everything - the perfect recipient for a custom-made Beautiful Reusables gift basket created using vintage, sustainable, and reusable products.

Mainline Green Home in Berwyn, Pa., brings a touch of elegance to the eco-friendly home and family. The shop specializes in children and baby products, organic home cleaners, repurposed art, eco- friendly gifts, and more. Mainline Green Home has a children's play habitat so kids can have fun and stay occupied while parents shop for toxin-free, organic, and responsible toys, books, games, and gifts.

Green Your Office Holidays With GreenLine Products

Whether it's a big off-site bash or a small, after-work soiree, every office celebrating the season has three things in common - cocktails, crackers, and cake. With a dearth of china in the office, do the next best thing for the environment by checking out GreenLine Paper Company's wide selection of eco-friendly disposable dinnerware.

Green your holiday parties by using biodegradable and compostable bagasse plates and bowls (made from sugar cane waste fiber), Eco-ware utensils, or biodegradable PLA cups and containers, which have the same look and feel as plastic but are made from processed yellow corn.

GreenLine Paper Company also offers plenty of "Secret Santa" stocking stuffers to nudge office manager about making your workplace eco- friendly. Give the subtle hint that the best part of waking up at the office might be organic, fair trade coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. For the cubicle-mate who always bags his lunch, why not give wrap-n-mat reusable sandwich bags. And no office stocking would be complete without a few recycled pencils, pens, and rulers.

Since 1992, GreenLine Paper has sold environmentally sound school and office products. The site offers a wide selection of products from 100 percent recycled copier paper and notebooks to pens, paper, eco-friendly lunch bags, and more.

The GreenLine catalog is free and available upon request at (800) 641-1117 and can be electronically downloaded at greenlinepaper.com.

New Root Menu Pleases Vegetarians and Meat Lovers

I am not a vegetarian, but several months ago I stopped eating red meat and pork. My reasons were primarilly environmental and due to my disdain for the common cruel practices in modern industry farming. However, knowing that Root has strict humane farming standards for all the happy little cows and piggies it gets its meat from, I can occasionally indulge in some maple bacon ice cream guilt-free.

But if your limitations are more strict, Root's new fall menu offers options to satisfy even devout vegetarians.

Plates include Dueling Beet Soups, featuring savory red beet and sweet yellow beet, parsnip salad, and herb vinaigrette; Asparagus and Mushroom Salad; Arugula Risotto with truffle honey jus; and Pumpkin Raviolis with sage brown butter and pine nuts. Pescatarians can enjoy shrimp chop salad with jicama, baby greens, and black bean vinaigrette; Monk Fish poached in coffee and rum with spaghetti squash sauté and chocolate mole; and Pan Seared Black Bass with cockles, baby artichoke, grilled fennel, fingerling potatoes, and dry tomato sambuca broth.

But, personally, I'll take this rare opportunity to get my free-range, organic meat.

Keep Abs Tight on a Tight Budget

At Equilibrium Pilates, clients have the amazing opportunity to workout with qualified apprentices for greatly reduced fees. Apprentices at various stages in their 600-hour intensive training program offer private lessons ranging from complimentary up to $45 for an hour lesson. On average, clients will pay $25 for an intensive, hour-long workout with an apprentice well on her way to holding a prestigious certification from Romana's Pilates.

With less than 50 certified teacher instructors in the world, local aspiring instructors are fortunate to have Equilibrium Pilates in Philadelphia, which serves as both a studio and a teaching facility. Clients working with apprentices are all supervised by a senior instructor. Apprentices may not be a good fit for clients with injuries or physical limits which demand a fully-certified instructor's expertise. Please call the studio to see if this opportunity is a good fit for you.
