June 2009 The Paige Turner: The Greenest City in America
Paige Wolf Media & Public Relations Newsletter
Last month, Mayor Nutter unveiled Greenworks Philadelphia, an ambitious, comprehensive framework to make Philadelphia the greenest city in the country by 2015. It sets goals in five areas - energy, environment, equity, economy, and engagement - and encompasses more than 100 initiatives. It's quite a lofty goal, but very admirable, clearly outlining the steps Philadelphia needs to take to catch up to and surpass greening efforts across the country. And with our groovy new recycling trucks painted by the Mural Arts Program, I think we are on the right track.

While city agencies make advances to green communities, it's never been easier for individuals to make simple efforts to lower their own carbon footprints. Going Green Today is an online service that creates customized plans with manageable day-to-day steps to create a 35 percent reduction in your carbon footprint. Answer a lifestyle assessment and receive a customized easy-to-follow plan, specific to your home, habits, and preferences, providing simple steps and represents lasting solutions for going green.

And I am excited to announce that I will be sharing more green tips and news with my new position as Philadelphia Eco-Living Examiner. So far I've taken on the "great water bottle drink-off" and tried to find ways to recycle everything in Philadelphia. Please check out my page and feel free to send me your ideas, tips, and comments.

The Monster Minders Reduce Clients' Carbon Paw Print

Before starting their award-winning dog-walking and pet-sitting service, The Monster Minders, husband-and-wife team Carrie and Lindsay Maria worked for an environmental non-profit. Carrying that passion for the environment into their current business, they launched their Wind Energy Challenge, in which they encourage clients to sign up for Wind Energy through PECO in exchange for discounts and a matching donation to the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS.) Through this program, their clients keep more than 50,000 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere annually. The company was recently featured on Treehugger.com for its innovative green initiative.

Recognized leaders in Philadelphia's pet care industry, The Monster Minders are a small core team of award-winning dog walkers and pet sitters. As pet care professionals, they have years of experience as both pet sitters and pet parents. With more than 60,000 visits under their belts, hundreds of Center City pet parents turn to The Monster Minders for their reliable pet care needs. The company offers prompt, client-focused customer service and all dog walks are one on one - no "pack walks."

So when you don't feel like dragging around Fido in 97 degree heat, save your physical and electric energy and call The Monster Minders.

Celebrity-Signed Handbags at A Perfect Fit

Take home a piece of history by bidding on a custom handbag signed by Phillies announcer Harry Kalas, Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer, Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin, "Office" star Steve Carell, "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz, and many more at this year's A Perfect Fit, auction and fashion show to raise money and awareness for women transitioning to work.

Tickets are still available for The Career Wardrobe's premier fundraising event, Wed., June 3 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Park Hyatt at the Bellevue. The event will feature a fashion presentation by a dozen local anchorwomen and media personalities. We welcome back our wonderful emcee Everett Gilison, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, and also have distinguished councilwomen Blondell Reynolds Brown, Jannie L. Blackwell, and Marian B. Tasco modeling our celebrity-signed handbags.

The evening also will include live music from singer/songwriter Karen Gross and a spectacular silent auction featuring amazing items like two-night accomodations at The Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman Islands, round-trip airline tickets, fabulous jewelry, spa packages, weekend getaways, and more.

At $70 per ticket, this event is a steal. In fact, each guest will receive a gift bag worth the price of the ticket. For more information and to purchase tickets, call (215) 568-6693 or visit www.careerwardrobe.org.

New Faves at Spirit Beauty Lounge

Here are some of my current obsessions from Spirit Beauty Lounge - who by the way had a fabulous month, featured in Lucky, Natural Solutions, and The New York Daily News.

I was ecstatic to find a natural nail remover that really works. Priti Soy Polish Remover contains no petroleum ingredients, is readily biodegradable, and is totally non-toxic. It's even safe for children and expectant mothers like me and really gets that polish off.

Alima Pure mineral makeup eyeshadow is seriously amazing. I usually find mineral makeup a bit messy, but with their killer brush in lieu of my finger, my eye makeup has never been easier or prettier.

Speaking of amazing make-up, Spirit is one of very few online retailers to carry rms beauty, a brand new line of pure organic make-up created by celebrity make-up artist Rose-Marie Swift. A favorite of celebrities like Gisele Bündchen, Miranda Kerr, Karolina Kurkova, and Zoe Saldana, rms beauty is formulated with raw, food-grade, organic ingredients in their natural state. The result is nutrients interacting with skin to promote hydration, softness, and total radiance. Spirit Beauty Lounge is currently offering free expedited shipping on rms beauty orders with the code RMSBEAUTY.

Staying Strong with Pilates During Pregnancy

Exercise has been a lifesaver for me during pregnancy, as I try to counteract all those craving trips to Sonic and IHOP. Though as I enter my seventh month of pregnancy, climbing the stairs in my house can leave me winded, I have managed to remain strong and considerably active by continuing my Pilates practice.

Pilates is great for pregnancy because it tones the abdominals, back, and pelvic floor/Kegel muscles, supporting a more comfortable pregnancy and delivery. Pilates also helps new moms get their figures back after baby is born.

As a pregnancy progresses, modifications will be necessary for health, safety, and comfort reasons. Be sure to start any program with a qualified, certified instructor like the ones at Equilibrium Pilates. And be sure to discuss your fitness regimen and address any questions to your doctor.

Linu Baby Offers Luxurious, Eco-Friendly Nursery Linens

Linu Boutique presents LinuBaby, a new line of 100 percent pure linen sheets for babies. Soft and luxurious to touch, pure linen is the ideal fabric for babies' sensitive skin. Flax, from which linen is made, is a natural fiber grown without pesticides, and does not need fertilizers or artificial irrigation, making it a truly ecological choice.

Linen sheets are easy to care for and only get softer with use, plus they are hypoallergenic and thermo-regulating, so the baby's bed will stay cool in summer and toasty warm in winter. Absorbing as much as 20 percent of its weight in moisture before ever feeling wet, linen stays fresh and cool and can withstand literally centuries of use.

Each Linu baby set includes a fitted sheet, a decorative pillow case, and either a flat sheet or duvet cover. Sets are available in four colors: lavender on white, green on white, white on blue, and amber on natural. The decorative hemstitched stripe leaves plenty of space for the baby's name monogram, making it a true heirloom. View the full line online.
