The Paige Turner: This is Not About Snow
|
|
Have you ever
Googled yourself into a panic over BPA in your baby's toys? Have you agonized over the
sweatshop labor that may have gone into your child's wardrobe or worried about
the possibility that lavender bath wash may cause young boys to grow breasts?
I
have. And I am looking for other slightly neurotic, overly informed
parents to interview for a project I am working on. It's tough to be a
"green mom," dealing with the growing concerns and changing studies as
we try to be environmentally and socially conscious. I want to hear
your stories about scraping lead paint off the walls and searching
every label in your cabinet for parabens.
Contact me if you
have something to share. And in the meantime, I hope this newsletter
can offer some tips on making your eco-friendly life a little easier.

The Monster Milers - Volunteer to Run With Shelter Dogs
|
|
|
 |
After years of dedicated work with shelter animals and pet rescue, The Monster Minders announce the launch of a program that combines their love of running with their love of dogs. The award-winning dog
walking and pet sitting service has created The Monster Milers - Running Miles
with Philadelphia's Homeless Monsters. This group offers a fun way to
volunteer, running with Philadelphia's homeless dogs.
One of the main reasons shelter dogs
have problems being adopted is they can appear overly excitable. But after
sitting in a room for 23 hours a day, even under the care of loving staff
and volunteers, a dog can get stir crazy.
"Kennel craze" can be easily combated with exercise - after all, a
tired dog is a happy dog. A regular running routine for dogs can help
take the edge off and proves that dogs can make a wonderful running
buddy for their new families.
Learn more about volunteering with The Monster Milers on their Facebook page. A full Web site is coming soon.

Host a Clothing Swap at The Wardrobe Boutique
|
|
|
 |
Nothing
to wear? One of the greenest, and certainly cheapest, ways to spruce up
your wardrobe is a clothing swap. Round up your girlfriends, clean out
your closets, and trade the clothing and accessories you no longer
wear, or just no longer love.
The Wardrobe Boutique
offers opportunities for private groups to schedule their own clothing
swaps in one of the boutique's spacious rooms. Up to 15 women can
gather and pay a small entry fee to benefit The Career Wardrobe
to have access to a spacious, private swap room. They'll also get dibs
on some free and highly discounted overstock from the store. Anything
that doesn't get snatched up, goes right back to the nonprofit boutique.
For more information on hosting your own swap, contact amzie@careerwardrobe.org
p.s. The Wardrobe Boutique announces new hours with Wednesdays open until 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays 11-6 p.m.
