The
Paige Turner: Hybrid Parking Only
|
|
After almost eleven years
of feeling completely humiliated showing up to my eco-events in the
gas-sucking SUV my husband and I shared, we finally had the impetus to
get the hybrid I've always wanted. The old Jeep's sun roof started
leaking in the heavy rainstorms, the final straw to say goodbye.
Strangely, when we visited
the car dealerships, none of the salespeople seemed overly eager to sell
us a hybrid. Some actually tried to steer us away from them, saying
they were "hard to find." Personally, I think they were just being lazy
and sadly unknowledgeable about the benefits of buying a hybrid.
The price
difference between a conventional car and the hybrid model is about
$5,000. The car we chose has a $2,250 federal tax credit, which covers
about half the extra cost. And for someone who tends to keep a car
well over five years, the gas savings should pay for the remaining
investment.
In addition to the obvious
environmental benefits, we quickly discovered advantages we never knew
existed. Visiting the Adventure Aquarium on a crowded Sunday afternoon,
we saw "Hybrid Parking Only" signs right next to the handicapped spaces.
We were thrilled to avoid hours of circling and walking miles with a
stroller. And it turns out driving a hybrid has a few extra perks to
make being eco-conscious all the more worthwhile.

computers, but at least a few times a year I run into something I
seriously need help with. And more often than not, those computer
meltdowns come on a Friday night or Labor Day weekend. I am so thankful
to have found Rob Resnick, computer genius extraordinaire, who
specializes in networking, maintenance, and repair. He has saved my
virtual life more than once and I am happy to share his information with
