The
Paige Turner: The Sun Might Not Be Real
|
|
This month I had the
opportunity to not just watch CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta's
special on the impact of toxic chemicals, but more importantly, I
was able to hold my mother captive in front of the TV.
In the common — and often
generational — argument over the concern of environmental toxins (i.e.
those toys were good enough for you), being able to show actual
scientific evidence reported on a reputable news channel is a huge step
in informing well-meaning friends and relatives who may not know all the
facts.
After watching Dr. Gupta's
hard look into toxic chemicals and their impact on young children, even
the most skeptical viewers will begin to consider swapping out their
chemical-laden cosmetics and plastic toys for safer, greener choices.
Given the recent evidence about pesticides'
link to ADHD, more parents may consider the importance of buying
organic produce. And in these cases, we have the media to thank.
If there are still naysayers
on the impact of climate change, I personally love this recent rant by Bill Maher about surveys
revealing that many believe global warming is a hoax. Among my favorite
lines: "One major reason pollsters say people have stopped thinking
global warming is real is we had a very cold, snowy winter. Which is
like saying the sun might not be real because last night it got dark."

|
|
|
"You don't have to be a superhero to save the planet,"
is the motto at Big Green Earth Store, a retail
store dedicated to selling the best tools to make easy, sustainable
changes to everyday living. I was so excited when this store moved right
into my neighborhood (and right across from Whole Foods), offering a
convenient stop to pick up Klean Kanteen reusable bottles, Compost Keepers, reusable bags, Naked Bee body care products, and
some of the coolest up-cycled accessories I've ever
seen. One of the great unique things about this store is that
it features Sun & Earth product refill stations for all your green
household cleaning needs, and drop-off receptacles to recycle household
items like batteries, bottle caps, cell phones, and eyeglasses. They
even sponsor community events like Earth Saturday in April and free
training classes on how to live a greener lifestyle (like worm-factory
composting). If you aren't lucky enough to be around the corner like me,
you can shop online and they'll ship to
anywhere in the U.S. for only $5. But if you can stop in, be sure to bring along the exclusive 10%
off plus free gift coupon at the bottom of this newsletter.

Funny
Notes for the Dog Days of Summer
|
|
 |
 One
of my favorite parts of the day is coming home to the note from my
"Monster Minder" Dennis. It's great to hear about the adventures my
American Hairless Terrier Gizmo has on his daily walks, and Dennis is
great at writing laugh-out-loud tales of a dog's life in the big city.
Here are a few excerpts:
"Today a man asked me if Gizmo was
magical, and if I could pet him for his 'healing powers.'"
"Gizmo
became enamored with a potato chip wrapper and was insistent on
carrying it around town."
"I'm not sure what Gizmo's been eating,
but there was something blue in his poop."
"Gizmo managed to make friends with a very
cranky PPA worker. I feel that anyone who brings a smile to the PPA is
doing a community service."
Get your own Monster Minder for
those hot days when you almost want to let your dog do his business
inside. Almost.
Congratulations to The Monster Minders for
winning "Dog Walking and Pet
Sitting Services" on Philadelphia
Style's Hot List.

The
Career Wardrobe's New Location Doubles Space
|
|
 |
In order to keep pace with the rising
demand for its services, The Career Wardrobe announces the
relocation of its client service offices. This month, the
organization enters its new 5,000-square-foot facility at
21 S. 12th St. Just around the corner from its current
location, this first floor space gives The Career Wardrobe greater
visibility and accessibility for both clients and
donors. With the dressing suite doubling its size, the
organization will be able to accommodate more appointments for women in
need of interview wardrobe, skills, and mentoring. Last
year, more than 7,000 women struggling to enter or re-enter the
workforce turned to The Career Wardrobe for resume review, professional
clothing, and a caring hand to help them move
forward. After taking advantage of The Career Wardrobe's
professional clothing and job search consultation, 54 percent of women
receive a job offer within two interviews. For every woman employed, The
Career Wardrobe saves tax payers more than $10,000 a year in public
benefits, or $26 million annually. For more information, call (215)

Pure

If you're my doctor or a family member, you know my married
name is actually Bederka. As it's certainly more rare, than Wolf, I was
surprised to find another Paige Bederka in the family. Fortunately, my
cousin Paige and her husband Jim are doing the family name good by
producing high-quality, 100% real meat dog treats. Free of fillers and
preservatives, Real Meat Pet Treats are dehydrated to maintain their
nutritional value removing only liquid, while leaving the enzymes,
vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients intact. Check out their online store for
