September 2010 The Paige Turner: No More Dirty Looks
This summer has been especially eye opening for consumers who didn't know the dirty truth about conventional makeup products. Once upon a time, I was as reluctant to give up my Chanel Mademoiselle as anyone. But after an education in toxicity, and enlightenment by luxurious, safe, and effective beauty brands, it was easy to be an advocate for green beauty.

Recently, Annie Leonard, creator of the viral video The Story of Stuff turned her sights on the beauty industry with The Story of Cosmetics. This short, simple video is a must watch.

This summer also saw the launch of the book No More Dirty Looks: The Truth About Your Beauty Products and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics by Siobhan O'Connor and Alexandra Spunt. The book is an easy, information-packed resource perfect for anyone thinking about greening their beauty routines. And I am giving one away for free (there would be an exclamation point here if spam filters allowed it.)

Just click Forward to a Friend and send to a woman in your life you'd like to see green her beauty. A winner will be randomly selected by the end of the month. Good luck (exclamation point).

BECAUSE: Life Can Be Irritating. Skin Care Shouldn't Be
TCW Homepage There are so many wonderful organic products focused on keeping the skin on your face beautiful and clean. However, even though most of your skin is located on the rest of your body, all-over skin care tends to get the short end of the stick.

BECAUSE Skin Care is a new line of sustainable, gentle, and highly effective body cleansers, moisturizers, and scrubs. BECAUSE is committed to using only the purest, highest quality, and most effective raw materials and uses 70% or greater certified organically grown content.

scrubWith lack of transparency being one of the biggest issues in a cosmetic world filled with "proprietary ingredients," BECAUSE invites you to read its ingredient labels and learn about the skin benefits and source of all its ingredients. The BECAUSE Web site lists a detailed glossary of all ingredients and their health benefits. And with airless containers and a heavily concentrated formula, one bottle goes a long way.

BECAUSE products are currently available exclusively at spiritbeautylounge.com. For more information about BECAUSE, visit becauseskincare.com.

Philadelphia Magazine Names juju salon Best of Philly
bopjuju salon & organics was beyond thrilled to win this year's prestigious Philadelphia Magazine "Best of Philly" for "Best Salon."

Owner Julie Ebner posted this on her blog: "What makes this award truly amazing is that a green, all-natural salon was selected out of a pool of hundreds of chic and style-setting salons in the area. The fact that we are organic and different from conventional salons says something about the growth and acceptance of green businesses in general."

Pricier Products Can Save You Time AND Money
ilaA principle of both the green-minded and the smart spender, quality is better than quantity. Just ask anyone who's gone through a dozen cheap T-shirts before settling on a well-made organic cotton tee. After all, consuming massive amounts of cheap stuff is how we got into this environmental and economic crisis in the first place.

But the little-known truth is that when it comes to organic beauty products, the higher price tag usually doesn't cost you any more in the long run. Besides the obvious benefits of using better products, organic beauty products are almost always highly condensed and tightly packaged. This translates into much longer use from a single tube or bottle.

For instance, a bottle of conventional body wash or shampoo would last me about two or three weeks. I'd pour ounces of oozing, watered-down formula out of a giant spout and the bottle would be empty before my next trip to the market. But bottles of Amazon Beauty Rahua shampoo and conditioner, Vive Sana sunscreenBECAUSE body cleanser, and ila Rainforest Renew can last months.Visit Spirit Beauty Lounge for a carefully curated selection of the best beauty bang for your bucks.

Philly Announces Curbside Recycling for ALL Plastic

You probably know by now that I love recycling. I think it's one of the easiest, most vital things we can do to help the environment. But admittedly, I don't know anyone who didn't find it a pain to check the tiny number on every piece of plastic and then lug all those odd numbers off to specialized collection centers. So I was psyched to learn that the city of Philadelphia is now accepting all numbers of plastic materials through single stream recycling. Yep, that means all your #1-7's can go in the same blue bin. No more hassle, no more sorting, no more extra trips — no excuses. Learn more here about everything that can — and the very few things that can't — be recycled.
